This is never the way we want to be interacting with our fellow riders because we pride ourselves in building a brand that provides the best products and support to riders, but today we have decided to issue a voluntary recall for the Loam Pedal Gen 2. We have received 4 reports of cracked axles on the Loam Pedal Gen 2, which we launched in July of this year, and frankly we believe it's 4 too many. If you currently have this pedal, we ask that you stop riding it immediately, as there is a risk of serious injury.
This is extremely disappointing and we are sincerely sorry to all the riders who entrusted us by buying this pedal. We want to make sure all current owners of the Loam Pedal Gen 2 are able to keep riding at no cost to themselves, so we will be offering owners of this pedal a free set of our Range Composite Pedal. This is our interim solution until we have a revised, improved axle ready to ship. The axles can be easily swapped from the pedal body using basic tools.
How did we get here?
Any kind of product failure is obviously deeply concerning. While 4 failures may represent 0.16% of pedals we’ve sold so far globally, the fact that they cracked is unacceptable. We discovered that a small batch of axles had a defect in the heat treatment process. Due to the potential of spindle batches being mixed, we are not comfortable having any of them ridden right now and have decided to recall all of them in the field.
What testing standards do we use?
Given the abuse that pedals endure and the lifetime warranty we offer riders, we exceed ISO test standards by 10x, have developed our own drop and impact test procedures that our factory adopted for all pedals they manufacture, and, as an added safeguard, we had the third-party German test lab, EFBE, conduct its TRI-TEST® Condition 5 test, which is its highest test standard and certification. This test protocol focuses on Fatigue, Maximum Load, Overload, and Stiffness testing to replicate forces endured during “extreme jumps, downhill rides at extreme grades and at speeds exceeding 40 km/h. Jumps and drops of more than 120 cm. Examples: Downhill, Freeride, Dirt MTB.”
What’s the plan?
We are currently in the process of testing revised axle designs and will follow up with the replacement axle as soon as possible. As we continue progress toward resolving this issue, we can't have riders left in limbo while we produce the solution. We take this very seriously, and to show our commitment, we are offering owners the option to receive a brand-new pair of our Range Composite Pedals free of charge as an interim solution until we have a revised axle system to send out. These are yours to keep after the replacement axles are sent out - put the Range pedals on another bike, give them to a friend, whatever you'd like but I just want to make sure you're taken care of in the meantime.
How do Loam Gen 2 pedal failures compare to Range and Loam Gen 1 pedals?
While the 0.16% failure rate may seem low, it is significantly higher than both Loam Pedal Gen 1 and Range Composite Pedal. For reference, Range composite pedals have not had a single reported cracked or sheared axle across tens of thousands of units sold, and Loam Gen 1 has had two reported failures, both of which were determined to be non–manufacturing related. That combined failure rate is less than 0.003%.
Are Loam Gen 1 or Range Pedals impacted?
No. Loam Gen 1 and Range pedals use entirely different axle systems and do not share spindle batches with Loam Gen 2 pedals.
How do I file a claim for the recalled pedals?
We are reaching out to all customers who purchased directly from us to arrange shipment of the replacement Range Pedals and will follow up with the revised axle system as soon as we have it available.
